This is so nice to hear as someone who loves structure until they don’t. and then loves spontaneous days… until they don’t. I’m in a similar season and in the scramble stage of figuring out balance. This post gives me hope
Appreciated hearing this as someone who feels like they’re in a dead-end 9-5. Trying to figure out what’s next for me, but your framing helps to remind me that it’s not all bad. Thank you for sharing your beautiful words :)
I’ve just left a stable copywriting job after being told my role was no longer needed. It’s fallen at a great time because I’ve been wanting to go freelance this year anyway, and the clients I had to work with at my previous job weren’t ones I felt passionate about, so my creativity was slowly being stifled.
However, it was much sooner than expected! Since I don’t have the necessary savings to go all in freelancing straight away, I decided to get a job in a cafe for a few hours a week to cover bills, which I’m hoping will then reignite my creativity and writing, and that freelancing will flow in its own time.
Thank you for sharing this, Jenna. I believe you’re set out to do wonderful things and everything will fall into place. 💛 let this time reinvigorate that send of playful joy and creativity again! Excited for you!
As someone who's still very much in the freelance trenches (although not ready to leave yet...), it's refreshing to hear that other people also ping-pong between craving freedom and craving structure. This was a beautiful read, thanks for sharing!
This was such a great read and such a refreshing perspective. As someone who also loves routine, I agree that 9-5s can provide stability, security, and plenty of freedom if you find the right one.
Thank you so much for sharing this! I have been really needing to hear someone who shares the same thoughts. Maybe even more do, but are afraid of getting ostracized in the modern world that's constantly pushing hybrid and remote work in every corner.
I, too, have felt suffocated when I worked remote (and that was for a second job). The promise of freedom is exaggerated - having a structure is a blessing in disguise. You'd think doing repetitions will drain you, when it just makes you cherish your free time more (because you actually have it).
Of course, it all depends on the job, but I predict that 9-5s will have a comeback!

Means a lot, thank you for reading 🥺💛
thank you for creating🫶🏼
Beautiful piece Natalie- structure can be suffocating, but it can also be criminally underrated
